Partial Denture FAQs

Our dentist answers the questions patients ask most before getting a crown.

How long does it take to get used to a partial denture?

A new partial denture may feel awkward or bulky at first, which is normal, and inserting and removing it takes practice. Eating soft foods cut into small pieces can help while you adjust, and reading aloud can help your speech settle in.

Can I sleep in my partial denture?

Your dentist will give you specific instructions. At first you may be asked to wear it all the time to find spots that need adjustment, and afterward most patients are advised to take it out at night and keep it moist in water or a soaking solution.

Why does my partial denture feel loose or sore?

Your mouth naturally changes over time, and the bone and gum ridges can shrink, which affects the fit. A sore spot often means too much pressure in one area. Both are good reasons to see your dentist rather than adjusting the denture yourself.

Can I use toothpaste to clean my partial denture?

No, toothpaste can be too harsh for denture material. A denture cleanser with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, or mild hand soap, used with a soft brush works better, followed by a thorough rinse.

Does insurance cover partial dentures?

Coverage varies by plan, and benefits for dentures may be handled differently than other restorative care. Our team can review your options before treatment, and we offer flexible financing through CareCredit and Cherry.

When Your Partial Denture Needs an Adjustment

Strong, natural-looking and built to last

Your mouth changes over time, so it is normal for a partial denture to need adjusting, and we are here to help when it does.

Your Denture Feels Loose

If your partial denture shifts or feels less secure than it used to, it may be a sign that your gums or the bone beneath them have changed shape. Poorly fitting dentures can cause sores or infections, so a loose fit should be checked by your dentist rather than adjusted on your own.

You Notice Soreness or Irritation

A sore spot often means the denture is putting too much pressure on that area. Dr. Reem can adjust the fit so wearing the denture is more comfortable.

Chewing Feels Different Than Before

If chewing feels harder or your bite feels off, the denture may no longer fit the way it once did. This can happen as your mouth changes over time, and Dr. Reem can check the fit and make adjustments.

Partial Dentures to Restore Your Bite and Smile

Losing more than one tooth can make everyday tasks like eating and speaking more difficult, and it can affect how confident you feel about your smile. Not every situation calls for a fixed restoration, and a removable option can offer a comfortable, practical solution.

As part of our general dentistry services at Harmony Cosmetic Dentistry and Implants, Dr. Reem Alramli, DMD, designs custom partial dentures to replace multiple missing teeth. A well-fitted partial denture can make eating more comfortable and help improve your speech.

Caring for Your Partial Denture at Home

A partial denture needs daily care to stay clean and keep its shape. The American Dental Association advises brushing it each day with a denture cleanser, since toothpaste can be too harsh for denture material, and rinsing it thoroughly before it goes back in your mouth. Standing over a folded towel or a sink of water while you clean it helps protect it if it slips.

When it is not being worn, keep your partial denture moist in water or a soaking solution, since it can lose its shape if it dries out. Keep cleaning your remaining natural teeth and gums as usual, and if the denture cracks, chips, or loosens, call our office instead of using glue or a repair kit, which can damage it.

What Is a Partial Denture and How Does It Compare to a Complete Denture?

A partial denture is a removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth using replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored base. Depending on your needs, it may have a metal framework and clasps that connect to your remaining teeth, or other connectors that look more natural.

The right choice comes down to how many natural teeth remain. A partial denture is designed for patients who still have some healthy teeth, which help support the appliance, while a complete denture replaces an entire arch once none of the natural teeth are left. Dr. Reem can help determine which one fits your situation during a comprehensive exam.
